In the first quarter of 2023, Vietnam exported 552.61 thousand tons of coffee, reaching a value of 1.23 billion USD. Compared to the first quarter of 2022, coffee exports decreased by 5% in volume and 5.4% in value. Despite the global trend of decreasing coffee consumption due to inflation and economic difficulties, Vietnamese export businesses still recorded optimistic signals. 

The reason behind this is that coffee production in various countries decreased, resulting in a lower supply compared to demand. Specifically, the International Coffee Organization (ICO) estimated the global coffee consumption demand to be around 178.50 million bags, but the global coffee supply only reached approximately 171.30 million bags. As a result, there was a shortage of 7.27 million bags in the market. 

This presents a significant opportunity for Vietnam to boost coffee exports to the international market and compete with major coffee-producing countries like Brazil. The latest EU regulations on product origin require assurances that they are not linked to deforestation or forest degradation activities. The new regulations also mandate European coffee-selling companies to collect coordinates and positions of coffee plantations in the producing countries. 

To comply with the EU’s new regulations concerning environmental protection, sustainable production, and forest conservation, coffee-producing businesses in Vietnam need to invest in equipment and technology to trace the origin of their products. They also need to be cautious not to develop coffee farms in areas with damaged or degraded forests.

Trong quý I/2023, Việt Nam đã xuất khẩu 552.61 nghìn tấn cà phê đạt 1.23 tỷ USD. So với quý I/2022, xuất khẩu giảm 5% về lượng và 5.4% về trị giá. Mặc dù sản lượng cà phê tiêu thụ toàn thế giới có xu hướng giảm do lạm phát và kinh tế khó khăn, đơn hàng của các doanh nghiệp xuất khẩu vẫn ghi nhận tín hiệu khả quan. 

Lý do là vì sản lượng cà phê của các nước sản xuất giảm khiến cung thấp hơn cầu. Cụ thể, Tổ chức Cà Phê Quốc Tế (ICO) có ước tính nhu cầu tiêu thụ cà phê toàn thế giới sẽ rơi vào khoảng 178.50 triệu bao, nhưng nguồn cung cà phê toàn thế giới chỉ đạt khoảng 171,30 triệu bao. Do đó, thị trường sẽ bị thiếu hụt 7,27 triệu bao.  

Tuy đây là cơ hội lớn để Việt Nam có thể đẩy mạnh xuất khẩu cà phê ra thị trường quốc tế và cạnh tranh với các quốc gia sản xuất chủ lực như Brazil, quy định mới nhất của EU về xuất xứ của sản phẩm phải đảm bảo không liên quan đến nạn phá rừng hoặc các hoạt động gây suy thoái rừng. Quy định mới cũng yêu cầu các công ty bán cà phê tại châu Âu phải thu thập toạ độ, định vị của các trang trại trồng cà phê ở các nước sản xuất.  

Để có thể đáp ứng được các quy định mới của Liên Minh Châu Âu liên quan đến các vấn đề bảo vệ môi trường, sản xuất bên vững và bảo vệ rừng, các doanh nghiệp sản xuất cà phê ở Việt Nam cần phải đầu tư thiết bị, công nghệ để có thể truy xuất nguồn gốc của sản phẩm. Đồng thời cũng cần chú ý không phát triển nông trại trồng cà phê trên các vùng đất có rừng bị tàn phá, suy thoái.
